Bowel preparation for colonoscopy (hospital base)

Bowel preparation helps to cleanse your bowel to allow us to visualize the lining of the colon.

If bowel prep is not done properly, we maybe not able to examine your colon thoroughly.

Bowel prep starts ONE day before your colonoscopy appointment:

  1. Breakfast and lunch food menu : plain white bread, noodles ( mee sua, bee hon) soup with chicken or fish, plain porridge with chicken or fish.
  2. Do not take high fiber diet and oily food eg: vegetable, fruits, oats, wholemeal bread, milk, butter and fried food. As these foods are hard to digest during bowel preparation.
  3. You can drink milo O’, teh O’, coffee O’. No milk only sugar if needed.
  4. Last meal of the day will be at 2:30PM. No dinner but you may drink water, coconut water, 100 plus or honey drink. ONLY clear color water, no colorings.
  5. At 5:30PM drink Fortrans ( a power form medication) mix in 1 Liter of warm water and drink it within 1 hour.
  6. At 6:30PM drink 2nd sachet of Fortrans mix in 1 Liter of warm water and drink it within 1 hour.
  7. Please ensure you are near a toilet at home as this medication will induce diarrhea to clean your bowels.
  8. Ensure you drink lots of clear liquid. ( water, coconut juice, 100 plus are allowed)
  9. Pass motion until watery yellowish stool ( like urine colour).
  10. Have a good sleep.

On your colonoscopy appointment day:

  1. Come to hospital at 630AM to prevent any delay during admission to day care ward.
  2. Once reach the day care ward, drink 3rd sachet of Fortrans in 1 Liter of water or you can pass the medication to the nurse.
  3. Pass motion again until watery yellow stool. If your stool have particles, please do inform the nurse and they will inform the doctor.
  4. Patiently wait for your turn for the colonoscopy.
  5. You will get to know you result at the end of the colonoscopy once you are awake from the sedation. Any biopsy taken will send to lab and take 1-2 weeks for result to come back.
