Helicobacter is a type of bacteria that causes inflammation in the stomach lining. Although many may not have symptoms, 15-20% will develop stomach or duodenal ulcer and a smaller percentage (less than 1 %) will be at risk to develop stomach cancer. The chance of an infected individual to get stomach cancer is 3-6 times higher compared to a normal person. The infection can be screened with serology blood test and confirmed with urea breath test or gastroscopy. Patients with active infection can be easily treated with a short course of medicine (1-2 weeks).
